What Is Zero Period?
Zero Period is a new addition to the Fulshear High School campus this year. Zero Period is set to be a big help for students with their SATs and career readiness. “If a student passes all their STAAR tests, they are put into a SAT prep which would help them get into college,” Mr.Ward, Fulshear’s principal, said presenting one of the reasons Zero Period was put into place. “We also want to increase the scores on the SAT to help kids get into colleges they want to get into and opportunities for scholarships, things like that.”
With the implementation of Zero Period, there have been many mixed feelings about it by students and teachers. ”I would much prefer Power Hour over this,” said a 10th grade student who requested to remain anonymous, when asked about zero period. While on the other side of the spectrum an 11th grade student says “I would prefer Zero period because I get to relax in the morning instead of being faced with school work at the start of the day.”
“There is a thing called College and Career readiness, and so for a senior when they graduate they need to be college and career ready,” Mr. Ward said. If you reach this college and career readiness as a senior, you have a chance to not have Zero period be a part of your schedule. With this, seniors have to score a certain score on their SAT to be exempt from this period. As of right now Zero period looks like it might be rough, but it might prove to help be an effective source for students to raise their scores on the SAT’s and get the extra help needed.
With the new increase in the student body, there is going to be an estimated 3,100 students in the following years. “I love our three period lunch system, but we may have a 4 period lunch if we do that. It’s gonna change the schedule completely, so I don’t know how that would affect Zero Hour,” said Ward. As of right now, the future of Zero Period may be decided later on throughout the year. But for the time being, Zero Period is not leaving and is here to stay.
