Steak 48; A delicious steakhouse that’ll make you spend money.
Steak 48 is a steakhouse located at 4444 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77027. Nestled in the River Oaks District, the beautifully designed restaurant made the place feel warm, with an inviting ambiance.
The setting, complete with neatly arranged tables, wine glasses, and soft lighting, felt sophisticated, feeling like a place where one can enjoy a memorable meal, whether that be for a special occasion or a night out. We were seated by a red and green curtain that made it quieter in the area.
The menu features a range of dishes priced between $20 and $76. It includes various subcategories such as appetizers, raw bar, caviar, salads, non-steak options, and fresh seafood.
Appetizers
Appetizers range from options like pork belly, crispy shrimp, or if you’re more interested in a vegetarian option like fresh burrata. To begin, you’ll be served a pan filled with six beautifully arranged bread rolls topped with garlic and parmesan.
Overall, I’d rate it a 10/10— it’s a nice start to the meal.
Braised Pork Belly ($21)
The pork belly priced at $21 is a standout. Tender with a hint of chili, the thinly sliced pork is served on a bed of spinach. It’s flavorful and satisfying, leaving you craving more. Depending on the size of your table, you might want to order two portions.
Overall, I’d rate it a 8/10—the dish was too delicious; I just wish there was more to offer.
Colossal Shrimp Cocktail ($11)
Another option is the colossal shrimp cocktail, with each shrimp priced at $11. The shrimp are served on a bed of ice to keep them chilled, accompanied by cocktail sauce and honey mustard for dipping. My personal favorite touch is the horseradish, which adds an extra kick when layered on top of the shrimp. The shrimp is soft, and the cocktail sauce mixed with horseradish will clear both your nose and brain.
Overall, I’d rate it a 9/10— the shrimp are delicious, but again just 3 would total $33.
Crispy Shrimp ($28)
Among the shrimp appetizers is the crispy shrimp served in a hot pan priced at $28. The shrimp is crispy, and is tossed in sauce, but still soft. The shrimp is also cooked in a sweet chili, and garlic aioli. This dish is one of my favorites.
Overall, I’d rate it a 8/10— the shrimp has an amazing chili flavor, but the price is what gets me. If you’re willing to pay for the shrimp, you’ll get what you pay for; but, it is expensive.
Entrées
Chilean Sea Bass ($62)
The Chilean Sea bass is soft and delicate, with options for braised or chardonnay cooking. It’s seasoned with sea salt and cracked pepper. While the fish was crispy on top and melted with each bite, I was disappointed by the portion size and presentation. When I got the Entrée, I was hoping for more with presentation as well as the size of the fish. I was hoping for a little more and felt like I wasn’t getting my money’s worth. Other than that, the fish was very crispy on the top.
Overall, I’d rate it a 7/10—tasty, but not quite worth the price.
45 day dry aged bone-in ribeye ($99)
This steak was so delicious. I’ve never been a fan of steak, but for the steak you’re actually getting a big cut of meat. It’s flavorful, and has a delicious crust. For a 22 oz cut of meat, it definitely is worth it. Their steaks undergo a 28-day wet aging process, a method where the beef, like a steak, is sealed in vacuum bags and aged in its own natural juices. This helps the flavor come through more and makes the steak tender.
Overall, I’d rate this a 9/10– very delicious, and for the amount, they take good care of the steak.
Sides matter
For sides, you’re encouraged to share due to the generous portions. Each one is served in a hot pan, and the waiters will present each option as they bring them out and serve it to you.
Corn Creme Brulee ($18)
The corn was very flavorful, and I’ve just recently started to like this side. It’s a sweet corn with cream, and turbinado sugar.
Overall, I’d rate it a 6/10— since I’m not the biggest fan of the corn, it places a little lower.
Boursin Cheese Whipped Potatoes ($14)
This dish is delicious. The potatoes are very soft, and fluffy. The cheese melting on the potatoes remained stretchy. When they pull the potatoes out from the pan it stretches out the dish.
Overall, I’d rate it a 7/10— it’s a good potato dish, but at the sametime it isn’t my all time favorite.
Conclusion
Overall, Steak 48 had a very sophisticated ambiance offering high-quality dishes along with professional waiters and waitresses. The gentle jazz they had on the speakers echoed throughout the top floor. Because the prices are on the higher side, this upscale steakhouse is best reserved for special occasions or when you’re ready to splurge on a memorable meal. The attentive service, the well-prepared dishes, and elegant setting make it worth the visit, even if you need to budget accordingly.
